Tap and Toilet Repairs in The Gap
The search term tap and toilet repairs The Gap usually means one of the suburb's older bathrooms has a drip or a loo that won't stop running. Census figures put the suburb at 92 per cent separate houses, and the 1960s and 1970s belt is on its second and third round of tapware and cisterns.

Faults a Repair Fixes and Faults It Cannot
A repair swaps a worn part inside a sound fixture; a replacement starts when the body or the porcelain itself is cracked. The dividing line is where the damage sits.
A dripping tap with a sound body usually needs a fresh washer or a repaired seat, and a dripping mixer usually needs a replacement ceramic disc cartridge. A cistern that runs, leaks or fills slowly is normally cured by swapping the inlet valve and the outlet washer.
Cracks move the job to replacement. A cracked body, cistern wall or pan is a fixture you replace, not repair. A fixture on its third repair in a year is often better replaced than patched again.

What WELS Stars and Flow Limits Mean
WELS stands for Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards, the scheme that registers taps and toilets for water efficiency and rates them by stars and water use. Every tap, toilet and cistern sold here also carries WaterMark certification, which a licensed plumber needs before installing one.
Two sets of limits matter for landlords. Queensland tenancy rules set the caps a rental has to meet before the owner can pass the whole water bill to a tenant:
- The cold taps over basins, sinks and troughs, mixers included, run at no more than 9 litres a minute.
- A dual-flush cistern uses no more than 6.5 litres on a full flush, 3.5 litres on a half flush and a 4 litre average.
- Bath taps, outdoor taps and taps feeding a washing machine or dishwasher sit outside the caps.
New houses, townhouses and units carry their own minimums: a dual-flush cistern rated 4 stars or better, and taps and showerheads of at least 3 stars. Renovations are exempt.

The Water Bill Cost of a Slow Leak
No, the concealed leak adjustment from Urban Utilities does not extend to water lost through dripping taps or running cisterns. It covers hidden pipe leaks only, so the loss from a leaking fixture sits with the owner.
Every drop still runs through the meter at the front boundary. A slow drip can send thousands of litres down the drain over a year, which is why a leaking fixture is worth fixing early rather than at the end of a quarter's bill.

Where Home Owner Repairs Stop in Queensland
The QBCC's list of unregulated work is short, and it covers only parts. A home owner may replace a tap's jumper valve or washer, and a cistern's drop valve washer, float valve washer and suction cup rubber. Anyone with the right knowledge and skill may do that much, and the finished work still has to meet the plumbing code's minimum.
Everything past that list is licensed work. Repairing or replacing a fitting counts as minor work, which a licensed plumber does, needing neither permit nor Form 4.
Installing a new toilet, or moving an existing one, is notifiable work. No council permit applies, and we lodge the Form 4 with the QBCC within 10 business days of completing the job. Swapping a whole tap is licensed work as well; the QBCC guide uses replacing a tap as its own example of work beyond the home owner's list.

Where Each Fixture Job Lands
Each fixture has a page of its own, and the fault decides which one the job needs:
Tap repairs
washers, ceramic disc cartridges, spindles and seats, from a spout that drips to a handle that won't shut off.
Toilet repairs
cistern valves, seals and the pan connector, for cisterns that run, leak or fill slowly.
Tap replacement
picking and fitting a new tap, mixer or full set of tapware when a repair no longer holds.
Toilet installation
swapping a whole suite, from pulling the old pan to setting and sealing the new one.

Tap and Toilet Questions From The Gap Homes
Call (07) 3524 7137What tap and toilet problems can a plumber fix in The Gap?
Drips at the spout, the handle or the base, cisterns that run, leak or fill slowly, weak flushes, and faulty stop taps and connections. Our tap repairs page and the toilet repairs page cover each fault in detail.
Is a dripping tap or a running toilet urgent?
No, neither is an emergency. Both can wait for a booked visit, though each wastes water until it's fixed. Water that won't shut off is urgent, so close the isolation valve or the meter and use our emergency plumber page.
What do WELS stars on a tap or toilet mean?
The stars come from WELS, Australia's water efficiency scheme: they show how much water the product uses. Every tap, toilet and cistern also carries WaterMark certification, the mark that makes installing it lawful.
Are there water flow limits for taps and toilets in a rental?
Yes. Queensland tenancy rules cap the flow before a landlord can charge a tenant for all water. Cold indoor taps and mixers are capped at 9 litres a minute or less, and a dual-flush cistern at 6.5 litres full flush, 3.5 half and a 4 litre average.
What affects the cost of a tap or toilet repair in The Gap?
The failed part, the tap or cistern type, damage to the seat, body or porcelain, and how easy the isolation valves are to reach. You get a fixed quote before any work starts, so the price is set once we've seen the job.
Who looks after the pipe to my tap, me or the water utility?
Urban Utilities looks after the street mains and the meter. Every pipe and fitting on your side of the meter is yours to maintain, including the branch lines to your taps and toilets.
