The appliance itself is the retailer's side. What makes it legal to run is the plumbing, and that belongs on a licence. Our kitchen and laundry plumbing page maps the whole bench, from the sink trap out to the machine points.

Water In, Waste Out Behind the Dishwasher
Three fittings do the work behind the cabinet: the isolation valve, the inlet hose and the waste connection.
Isolation valve
A small tap fitted to the supply, positioned where your hand can reach it. Closing it stops flow to that one appliance, so the kitchen taps keep working while the machine is serviced or swapped.
Inlet hose
The flexible hose runs between the valve and the machine's inlet. Length and fitting type come from the installation sheet supplied with the appliance, and we check both ends for drips.
Waste connection
The drain hose ties into the sink waste at its own outlet and loops up high under the bench before dropping down. That loop keeps dirty water from siphoning back between cycles.
With everything joined, we run the machine through a full cycle and stay until it finishes. We watch the valve, each joint and the drain the whole time. Power to the machine is a separate matter, outside this plumbing job.

Do You Need a Plumber to Install a Dishwasher
Yes, the connections are regulated plumbing work, so a licence holder has to make them.
The QBCC's list of jobs anyone may do runs short: shower heads, filter cartridges, washers and jumper valves inside taps, cistern washers, grates and caps on ground-level drains, and irrigation lines beyond a tap. Connecting a dishwasher sits outside that list. The QBCC frames the licensing rule as protection for the home, for health and for the owner's rights.
Two labels matter on the products. The machine itself needs only registration under the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme, and no WaterMark. The fittings going in at the connection are different: most plumbing products in Australia need WaterMark certification, the trademark on them and a listing on the WaterMark database before installation.
Anyone can check a licence. The QBCC publishes online licence registers you can search in a minute.

When There Is No Water or Waste Point
A swap reuses the points already behind the cabinet; a first-time install means extending supply pipework and altering the waste.
Replacing an old machine with a new one is the simple case. Valve, hose and drain are already under the bench, and the new machine joins them. A first install is different, because the supply pipe gets extended and the sanitary plumbing changes.
For an existing home, that work is classed as notifiable. It needs no permit from council and no inspections, but we must register it with the QBCC by Form 4 once it's finished. The form goes in within 10 business days, and you receive a copy.
Buildings with a twist change the category. Where one drain serves several homes, or the supply runs dual reticulation, adding an appliance becomes permit work, and we apply to the local government for a permit first. Unit and apartment owners should ask which category applies.

What Sets the Price of Dishwasher Installation
Cost turns on the points, the access and the paperwork: whether a connection already exists, how tight the cabinet is under the bench, and whether a Form 4 goes in.
A replacement at an existing point is the simplest version of the job, since the plumbing is already in place. A new point adds pipework, waste alterations and the Form 4 lodgement. The licensee lodges the form and pays its fee, and may pass that cost, with administrative costs, on to the owner.
Access matters as well. Cramped cabinets and long pipe runs take longer to work in than open ones. Whatever the shape, the figure is set by a fixed quote before any work starts, so nothing gets added later.

The Kitchens We Connect Around The Gap
At the last census, 92 per cent of homes here were separate houses, so most dishwashers go into a detached kitchen with its own supply and waste. Those kitchens mostly date from the sixties and seventies fill, when a dishwasher point was not standard.
Plenty of cabinets in the streets around Ashgrove Golf Club still have no connection behind them. That gap between the appliance and the plumbing is exactly what a new point fixes.
If the bench is getting a full redo at the same time, our sink installation guide covers the waste and trap side, and water filter installation handles the drinking-water line.

Dishwasher Questions From The Gap
Call (07) 3524 7137Who installs dishwashers in The Gap?
A plumber with a current QBCC licence does the hookups for water and waste. The QBCC publishes online licence registers anyone can search, so you can confirm a licence before booking.
What does a plumber connect when fitting a dishwasher in The Gap?
Three parts: a valve that isolates the supply, the hose carrying water in, and the drain line to the sink waste, looped high. We run a test cycle before leaving and check each joint for drips.
What does the star rating on a dishwasher mean?
The rating shows the machine's water efficiency. The label carries the stars and the litres each cycle uses, and the product is registered under the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme before sale.
Can the store that sold my dishwasher connect it?
Yes, provided the installer carries a QBCC plumbing licence. The hookups are regulated work in Queensland, so whoever does them needs that licence, and the registers confirm it.
Why does a dishwasher need its own isolation valve?
The valve shuts water to that one appliance alone. Servicing or replacing the machine then happens without cutting supply anywhere else in the home.
